Osseointegration is not a new science, dental implants have used the idea of mending metal screws to bone and then applying a fake tooth for over 50 years. The use of this technique for attaching limb prosthetics is relatively new in the United States but has been long used in Europe.

This technology gives an amputee a significant advantage over the use of a typical prosthetic device specifically related to how the prosthetic attached to the amputation area.
